MicroFinance in Chile

From: "andrew cooke" <andrew@...>

I've been trying to work out how to support micro-finance in Chile. I've
talked to a couple of banks (Santander and Desarollo) and sent an email to
others (no reply yet) - there seems ot be no way to invest via banks
(although some banks do offer micro-financing).

There is a charity called BanIgualidad (Equality Bank) -
http://www.banigualdad.cl/ - but it's headed by Lavin (notorious extreme
right wing politician), which makes it extremely suspect (no doubt it does
some good, but that good will be used by Lavin's excellent "public
relations" team...)

More usefully I found the following two links which seem to be umbrella
organisations for various charities:
  http://www.comunidadorganizacionessolidarias.cl
  http://www.portalciudadano.cl

The second of those has this list of organisations -
http://www.comunidadorganizacionessolidarias.cl/content/view/84647/Organizaciones_Asociadas.html

But it's very hard to find anything that is related to micro-finance
(especially if you discount evangelical christian groups). This might be
one candidate - http://www.rodelillo.cl/

Fundacion Rodelillo

I contacted this foundation - http://www.rodelillo.cl/ - and they said
that they had no political connections.

I don't find the site that easy to navigate, but the bank details for
contributions are here -
http://www.rodelillo.cl/como-per/aporte-en-dinero.html

(For some reason this page gets quite a few hits; I am not sure if these
are international queries, but they do reply to email and speak English -
a little poking around with Google shows that the founder is married to an
American, if I remember correctly).

I've created an email list so that people can more easily contact each
other and share information about microfinance in Chile. I assume Google
will add info on how to join.

The advantages of discussing using this list, rather than by private
email, are that (1) the activity will be visible in public to other
interested people and (2) if anyone else is interested, they can more
easily contact you/us.

I don't expect this to be a very busy group, but even if it lies dormant
it could help someone else in the future.

So please, if you are interested, I encourage you to subscribe (so that
you will receive email if anyone else sends anything later) and perhaps
post an email introducing yourself (if you do not mind your email being
public).

Cheers,
Andrew

Ooops. I forgot to add the details:

Homepage: http://groups.google.com/group/chile-microfinance

(You need to join before you can post. You do not need to sign up with
Google to do so, though, you can just send an email to
subscribe-chile-microfinance [at] googlegroups.com)
