I bought a pile of books in Buenos Aires, a couple of weeks ago. One - the one I almost didn't include - was a 1000 page novel called 2666 by the Chilean Roberto Bolaņo. It kicks ass. I've read about 60 pages so far, and it's just what I needed. Very easy to read (perhaps because it's chilean spanish), smart, modern, no magic realist crap. Here's a biography - http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/atlarge/2007/03/26/070326crat_atlarge_zalewski Andrew PS Borges is good too (surprise!), but not as easy to read - I bought a couple of his collections of short stories. I've also got stories by Cortazar, but haven't looked at them yet.
