X on Windows

From: "andrew cooke" <andrew@...>

Ysterday I was at Gemini -
http://www.gemini.edu/gallery/telescope/g0038.html - and found myself
stuck in the control room with only my laptop to work on.

Since it runs Windows and the system I'm developing runs on Unix this was
a problem. However, it turns out that Cygwin - http://cygwin.com/ -
which I've used for years (it provides a Unix command line environment on
Windows) has an X server - http://www.cygwin.com/xfree/

Installation is trivial (run the installer from the Cygwin site and select
the X server). The manual - http://www.cygwin.com/xfree/docs/ug/ - wasn't
much use (if the server ws started with startx /xsession/xserverrc it
crashed after a minute or so) - but if it was started directly from the
command line

XWin &
twm &

then everything worked fine. A full-screen window appears with the usual
clunky twm menu. I could ssh to my Unix machine and run X applications
there, with windows appearing on the laptop. Iraf's xgterm worked fine,
but ds9 - http://hea-www.harvard.edu/RD/ds9/ - failed to connect.

Also, it works nicely with JS Pager -
http://hem.fyristorg.com/jspage/jspager.html - so it was easy to jump from
X to Windows and back.
