Acme (and Plan 9 / Inferno)

An interesting paper by Pike on Acme - A hybrid of window system, shell,
and editor, Acme gives text-oriented applications a clean, expressive, and
consistent style of interaction. Traditional window systems support
interactive client programs and offer libraries of pre-defined operations
such as pop-up menus and buttons to promote a consistent user interface
among the clients. Acme instead provides its clients with a fixed user
interface and simple conventions to encourage its uniform use. -

Plan 9 Wiki - Developed by the people who devised UNIX, i.e. Bell Labs,
Plan 9 takes OS development back into the realm of research. [...] While
Inferno has become the commerical up-shot of Plan 9, the operating system
has not become defunct but is instead the Open Source development project
that drives Inferno, similar to the relationship between MacOS X and
Darwin. - http://www.cs.bell-labs.com/wiki/plan9/plan_9_wiki/1070032513/
