Bomb, bomb, bomb...

Forgot to mention that when we were in bed Sunday night there was an odd
noise. Paulina said it sounded like an explosion; I thought someone had
slammed some truck doors and went to look out the window.

Turns out it was a bomb at a small police court just a few blocks away -
http://diario.elmercurio.cl/2009/01/06/nacional/nacional/noticias/fdd757d7-8dfa-4f4e-a8a2-4ce890b9e845.htm
(noone was injured; there was a second, similarly ineffectual, bomb
elsewhere)

The group that claimed responsibility - Carceles Libres (empty jails) -
don't seem to have a "web presence". The act was in commemoration of the
death of Matías Catrileo - http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matías_Catrileo

He was a 22 year old Mapuche (the main surviving indigenous group here, I
think) agronomy student killed on Jan 3, 2008, by the Chilean "special"
police (GOPE) while occupying a farm of some kind (tsome kind of dispute
about land ownership and ancestral rights).

I know very little about the politics involved so can't really comment
much more...

Andrew
