Click-Free Linux Audio

From: andrew cooke <andrew@...>

I am having a really hard time getting click-free audio in Linux. As far as I
can tell it's a problem with ALSA and scheduling, not with any particular
audio device.

The best software solution I have found is to use the Jack audio server to
upsample to 96kHz. The Audacious music player will target Jack, which does
the resampling and is then stable enough to feed ALSA without glitches.
Without resampling (ie if Jack is set to 44.1kHz) then the glitches still
appear (I guess Jack simply passes directly through to ALSA).

Alternatively, in harware, Music Fidelity VLink appears to fix things. That's
not too surprising as it adds its own buffer (it's a syn-to-asych USB
converter).

I believe (but am not 100% sure) that Jack does not resample - I thnk
Audacious is doing so, via libsamplerate.
